No matter where you are in the world, this article explains the complete payment flow from checkout to bank payout.
How Cross Border Payment Processing Works on Yardio
When a buyer purchases your item, the payment goes through several stages before it reaches your bank account.
Let’s break it down using a real example.
Example: Seller in New Zealand Sells an Item for NZ$100
1. Customer Pays in NZD
- Buyer sees: NZ$100
- Buyer pays: NZ$100
- Payment currency: NZD
The buyer pays exactly what you listed. No currency conversion happens for the customer.
2. Stripe Payment Processing Fee
Stripe processes the card payment and charges its standard processing fee.
Typical fee:
- 2.9% + small fixed fee of around 30 cents
On NZ$100:
- Approx. NZ$3.20
Remaining:
- ~NZ$96.80
This covers card processing, fraud protection and payment infrastructure.
3. Yardio Platform Fee (2.5%)
Yardio applies a 2.5% platform fee to support hosting, platform development, security and support. Note this fee may vary.
On NZ$100:
- NZ$2.50
Remaining:
- ~NZ$94.30
4. Cross Border Currency Conversion (Stripe FX Fee)
Because Yardio operates on a US based Stripe platform account, funds moving to a New Zealand seller require currency conversion.
Stripe applies:
- Approx. 1 to 2% FX markup
On ~NZ$94.30:
- Approx. NZ$1.89
Remaining:
- ~NZ$92.41
Exchange rates fluctuate daily, so the exact amount may vary slightly.
5. Transfer to Stripe Express Account
Stripe transfers the funds to your connected Stripe Express account.
6. Bank Payout
Stripe pays out to your local bank account.
- Timing: Typically 2 to 7 business days
- Final received amount: ~NZ$92.41
Where Your NZ$100 Goes
Customer pays: NZ$100.00
- Stripe processing fee: ~NZ$3.20
- Yardio platform fee (2.5%): NZ$2.50
- Stripe FX conversion fee (~2%): ~NZ$1.89
Final payout: ~NZ$92.41
Total combined fees: approximately 7.6%
Why Does Currency Conversion Happen?
Yardio uses a US based Stripe platform account but supports sales from anywhere on in the world.
Stripe platform accounts have a home currency. When funds are transferred to connected accounts in a different currency, Stripe automatically performs a conversion.
You are not charged twice. The FX percentage covers the full conversion process.
Why Do Payout Amounts Vary Slightly?
Small variations are normal in international payments due to:
- Daily exchange rate movements
- Different card types such as corporate or premium cards
Stripe applies its exchange rate at the time of transfer.
